Chapter Seven

Brynn lay back on the bed, awaiting Paul to finally surface from the bathroom. He thought about what they’d just done and was surprised by the fact he didn’t feel guilty. Tomas has rubbed off on me too much.

That was too easy a reply. Blaming Tomas wasn’t fair. When he forced himself to answer to what he’d just done, he knew the wait had driven him half-mad. All the years away from Bear Mountain, away from the only home they’d really known, had worn away some of his shining armor. He’d always been the nice guy of the pair, the one who mellowed the gruffness that was Tomas.

Brynn had always done the right thing, even if it had hurt like hell. He’d always put others before himself. He’d never been the selfish type, yet he’d just been selfish as hell. He’d wanted Paul pregnant. He didn’t understand the urge he’d felt, nor could he explain it.

Twenty minutes later, the human finally opened the door, his face creased with anger. He stopped in the midst of the doorframe, glaring at Brynn.

“Why?”

Brynn only had the truth to offer. “Because you’re ours.”

Paul frowned. “I know I don’t really know the two of you yet, but I didn’t expect this from you. Tomas—that doesn’t feel as surprising for some reason.” He looked around the room. “Where is Tomas?”

“Showering, I presume.”

Paul walked deeper into the room. “I’m going to get some food. Alone.”

Brynn sat straighter in the bed. “You’re still healing. Is that a good idea?”

“Didn’t stop the two of you from taking what you wanted. Or rather, giving.”

The stab struck deep. Brynn finally felt the wave of guilt he should’ve been feeling all along. The anger on Paul’s face was hard to see. He never wanted to hurt his mate, and he’d done so the very first time they’d had him in their arms. “I’m sorry.”

“No. You’re not. Neither of you are.” Paul pulled on his discarded pants from the night before and left the room. “I shouldn’t be so shocked. Bears take what they want, always have.”

Brynn listened to their mate storm through the cabin before slamming the front door on his way out. Tomas rounded into the room seconds later.

“You just let him leave? Alone?”

“I think he needs some time to think.”

Tomas lifted his towel to dry his much shorter hair. “Do you at least know where he’s going?”

“Breakfast it sounded like.”

Tomas grinned. “The restaurant is a public space. I think I might be hungry as well.”

“Tomas,” Brynn said, a hint of warning in his tone. “He needs to calm down. You getting in his face won’t help matters.”

“We won’t be in his face. I need food.”

“We?”

“Get your ass in the shower. You’re coming with me,” Tomas said before digging into his saddlebags for his clean clothes. He threw them back down and headed for the closet. “Hopefully Jared left a few things behind.”

Tomas opened the half-full closet and pulled out a pair of jeans. “Bingo.” He pulled the denim on and glared at Brynn.
